Weight Loss Cleanses: Do They Work
As the global obesity epidemic continues, so does the search for easy and rapid weight loss solutions.
In recent years, weight loss cleanses have taken center stage as one of the most popular methods for dropping weight rapidly.
This article tells you all about weight loss cleanses, their effectiveness and risks.
The word cleanse implies making something clean or ridding it of impurities.
There is no standard definition of what a weight loss cleanse is or what it should include.
Generally speaking, the overarching goal of the cleanse process is to remove something from your diet or lifestyle in order to facilitate weight loss.
These cleanses are typically brief and involve a specific set of instructions for diet modification to achieve a certain goal. Some simply aim to reduce weight, while others promise fat loss in specific body areas.
The methods can vary greatly between cleanses.
Some include herbal supplements or exercise, while others focus solely on the types of food you eat.
Summary
Though there is no standard definition, weight loss cleanses are usually short-term programs, in which drastic dietary changes are implemented in order to promote rapid weight loss.
The Warrior Diet Is A Type Of Intermittent Fasting Where You Fast For 20 Hours Straight
“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.”
Intermittent fasting continues to be one of the most popular eating plans for people trying to lose weight. It involves periods of abstaining from food, and is often combined with other diets, like the keto or low carb diet. There are so many iterations: the 5:2 method, alternate-day fasting, the 14:10 diet, the eat-to-stop diet, and more. One that has garnered a lot of attention is the Warrior Diet.
ICYMI, the Warrior Diet was originally created in the early 2000s by Ori Hofmekler and based on his own experiences with it, which are outlined in his book by the same name. The diet initially revolved around very small “underfeeding” meals of dairy, eggs, fruits, and vegetables for 20 hours of the day and a four-hour “overfeeding” window.
Essentially, it was a very early version of intermittent fasting and said to mimic ancient warriors’ lifestyle of training and battling throughout the day and consuming a majority of their calories during the evening in one massive feast, explains Joel Totoro, RD, a sports dietitian and the director of sports science at Thorne Research in Scottsdale, Arizona. Hofmeklers original plan also had exercise suggestions built into it.
It sounds pretty intense. Is it healthy, safe, and effective for weight loss? Here’s what nutrition experts really think about the Warrior Diet.

Whats The Difference Between Cleanse And Detox Diets
Its difficult to differentiate between detox and cleanse diets because neither method has a standard, scientific definition. Plus, theres significant overlap.
The two terms are often used interchangeably when referring to this style of dieting, though some people claim that distinct differences exist.
Both diets are intended for short-term use, usually lasting anywhere from one to 30 days.
The main differences seem to lie in the overall intent behind the respective methods.
Why Many Detox Diets Dont Work

Most juice, tea or shake cleanses are woefully lacking in these essential detoxification nutrients and usually up-regulate just the Phase 1 pathway, releasing the toxins from the cells but leaving them to circulate in your bloodstream, making you more toxic than when you started. This is why such detox plans often leave you feeling nauseous and fatigued, and suffering from headaches and breakoutsthe opposite of how you are aiming to feel!

Detox Diets Focus On Eliminating Toxins
Detoxification diets usually operate on the notion that your body needs assistance to eliminate harmful substances, or toxins, from your system that may be impairing optimal health.
These toxins may refer to any dietary or environmental substance with the potential to cause harm, including but not limited to:
- Pollutants
- Acne and skin rashes
- Hormone imbalances
Though detoxes remain very popular, there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of this kind of diet regimen .
What Foods Do You Eat On The 3
The 3-Day Diet is a very specific food plan that is meant to be followed exactly as outlined. Portions must be eaten exactly as specified. Eating more than is recommended is not advised and it recommends dieters consume all meals, even if they are not hungry. Dieters are also instructed to drink 4 cups of water or other beverages that do not have any calories each day.
Foods to eat on The 3-Day Diet include:
- Day 1
- Black coffee or tea, with 1-2 packets Sweet & Low or Equal
- ½ grapefruit or juice
- 1 piece toast with 1 tablespoon peanut butter

What Are The Downsides Of The Warrior Diet That I Should Know About
Despite the glowing reviews, the Warrior Diet is restrictive and pretty extreme, which means it could lead to disordered eating habits for some people, says Amanda A. Kostro Miller, RD, a registered dietitian and advisory board member at Fitter Living. This diet promotes binge eating during the four-hour non-fasting period, which can lead to stomach distension, exacerbation of heartburn, and many other GI symptoms, she explains. Some at-risk people may become obsessive about the binge session and engage in harmful behaviors like purging to remedy feeling too full.
Like any form of IF, you may also experience feelings of fatigue and hunger during the fasting period, which are signs it probably isn’t a good fit for you.
Pankonin would not recommend the Warrior Diet because it is restrictive and could be harmful both physically and psychologically, especially if somebody has a history of disordered eating or an eating disorder.

A cleanse or a juice detox diet means you are voluntarily skipping solid food of any kind, and in lieu of it, only drinking liquids for a certain duration of time. Juicing involves squeezing any vegetable, fruit or nut into a liquid form. They should not be confused with smoothies, which pack in more protein and may even contain traces of solid food.
Most cleanses and diet plans are designed for 3-10 days time, and those who participate are asked to consume around six bottles of fruit or vegetable. Milk is not included in juicing.

An Easier Low Carb Approach
The 2 Day Diet is different from other intermittent diets in that it is basically a low carb diet for two days instead of a fast or very low calorie diet. It may be suitable for those that struggle with eating low carb all of the time or for those that find dieting too restrictive.
While weight loss is possible with the 2 Day Diet, dieters who follow the recommended reduced calorie Mediterranean diet will most likely see the best results.

Is The 7 Day Detox Plan Good For Weight Loss
Most people lose weight on a cleansing programme but the amounts vary on the degree of calorie restriction, says Suzie Sawyer, clinical nutritionist at Feel Alive UK.
Detox programmes including fasting, either for an extended period of time or for short periods, or those where only juices are permitted, will deliver quicker weight loss.
Most people feel much healthier after a cleanse and often have more energy. If people have inflammatory conditions, often these can be alleviated and other health issues can often be reversed. The success of these programmes also depends on overall lifestyle and whether individuals are able to sustain changes needed to their diet in the longer term. Plus, of course, its very dependent on each individuals health, but generally a cleansing programme has positive effects.
Dr Simone Laubscher, formulator of WelleCos The Super Elixir daily greens powder and founder of Rejuv Wellness, explains how weight loss through detoxing works:
Over-indulging in processed or packaged foods, takeaways, sugar, alcohol and caffeine can make it harder for the body to naturally detoxify. By reducing these acid-based foods and replacing them with plant-based, anti-inflammatory nutrients when detoxing, the body can easily rid itself of toxins, which allow the digestive system and liver to rest and recuperate.

While 5:2 fasting has some clear potential benefits for weight loss and blood sugar control, it also has some downsides. Restricting your intake to 500 to 600 calories two days a week isn’t right for everyone. If you have a history of an eating disorder, are taking medications or have a condition like diabetes, heart or kidney disease, struggle with hypoglycemia or are pregnant or breastfeeding, the 5:2 diet may not be appropriate. It’s always important to check with your doctor before beginning 5:2 fasting or any type of fasting diet.
The 5:2 fasting plan is flexible in that it doesn’t require calorie or macro counting, but it does limit your calories two days a week. Depending on your work schedule or personal obligations, capping your food intake can be difficult. Plan ahead for days where you have big events, like a wedding to attend or an important presentation at work. Aim to fast on days with less going on.

Common adverse symptoms with intermittent fasting include dizziness, headache, hunger, fatigue and weakness. These symptoms are usually present in those just beginning and may resolve over time. If you notice continued symptoms, it’s important to stop fasting and consult a medical professional to make sure this is the right approach for you.
Things To Keep In Mind
Before you start your detox and cleanse program, keep these pointers in mind and make this a daily habit. You will make the most of the 3-day detox plan and 7-day detox plan.
