People want the short cut, says Joel Rush, a clinical nutrition specialist at MD Anderson. Cleanses and fasts give us rules that are easy to follow. But as a weight loss method, they tend to fall down.
Cleanses, detox diets and fasts have a wide range of guidelines, depending on which plan you follow. Cleanses may require that participants drink only juice or abstain from certain foods. Fasts may require patients to give up food for certain periods of time.
And while a cleanse or fast may help you lose weight initially, there are many risks associated with these trendy diets. Here are four things you should know about cleanses, detoxes and fasts.
Your body does a pretty good job of cleansing on its own.
Toxins are the chemicals that dont have a place in our diets. You may take in toxins through food, your skin or the air. Usually, your body removes them on its own. Most people dont need to cleanse to remove them from their bodies.
Our kidneys do a very good job of removing toxins. Our livers do a very good job. Our colons do a very good job, Rush says.

According to the World Health Organization , a result above 0.90 for men and above 0.85 for women can be determined to be abdominal obesity.
Abdominal fat can be reduced through an overall fat loss.
Keep in mind that long-term fat loss needs a change in behavior.

- Phase 1: Enzymes protect cells from damage by breaking the toxins down into smaller, water-soluble substances.
- Phase 2: Substances from phase one bind with other substances, known as conjugates, to make them less harmful and even more soluble for excretion.

How To Prepare For Your Juice Cleanse
Ive got a whole guide on juice cleansing that you should definitely read but if you want the quick version, stay right where you are!
Before you get your teeth into your juice cleanse, make some small, healthy changes to your diet and lifestyle. This will make your transition into your cleanse a lot easier and youll be more likely to stick to it! If you already live pretty healthily and are reasonably active, you can probably jump straight into your cleanse, but if not, consider the changes below:
Avoid junk food, soda, instant foods, takeaways basically anything you know is unhealthy. Also, try to drink less caffeine if you can and avoid alcohol as far as possible.
Instead, start having salads, soups, homemade meals, nuts, lots of veggies. You could also consider swapping from dairy products to alternatives, like nut milk. These alternatives are often lower in calories than dairy but theyre also easier on your digestive system.
If youre cleansing, please make sure that youre properly hydrated! You arent eating as much as normal, so youll dehydrate more than you realise.
