This isnt an easy process for everyone, though the benefits are really worth it. Here are some of my tips to help you get through the process of cleanse regardless of how many days it is.
Minimize Your Exercise
Many cleanses say that you can continue to work out, and you should keep up with your physical activity. However, you may not want to push yourself too hard during a cleanse. Your body is already doing a lot of work while flushing out these toxins and waste. Make sure that you take plenty of time to rest while doing a cleanse.
Listen to Your Body
Its very important that you really look at how youre feeling during a cleanse. If you start to feel unwell or are having a reaction to the protocol, stop immediately.
Hydrate
Drink plenty of water during your cleanse. This will help your body flush out toxins and keep your hydrated.
Get Enough Sleep
Make sure youre getting at least eight hours of sleep at night while youre completing your cleanse. This will help to boost the results that you experience.
Are Juice Cleanses Healthy
First off, lets clarify what we mean by a juice cleanse. A cleanse is typically a 2-5 day period where you only consume juices. Some may just be fruits and vegetables, others may include healthy fats like nuts and avocado. Regardless, a cleanse typically means youre primarily consuming juice for an extended period of time.
For the most part, the nutrition experts we interviewed were not supportive of juice cleanses as a strategy for healthy living long term.
Kristian Morey, a Registered Dietician at the Endocrinology Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD explains that Juices are often made of healthy ingredients fruits and vegetables which are essential components of good nutrition. But in and of themselves, they do not provide your body with all essential nutrients.
Relying solely on juiced fruits and vegetables also neglects another nutrient your body needs protein. In order for your body to continuously rebuild and repair its tissues, it must have a constant source of amino acids to pull from. If your body isnt getting them from the food youre eating, its going to get them from your own muscles. As we lose muscle mass, our calorie-burning capacity lowers, making it harder and harder to lose weight.

The Truth About Detox
Detox diets claim to help your body expel toxic substances, and this, in turn, is supposed to improve energy and health while helping you lose some weight. However, there’s no scientific evidence to support any claims that a detox diet can improve upon something your body is able to do all on its own.
As long as you’re in good health and your liver and kidneys are in good working order, your body is able to naturally detoxify itself on a daily basis and eliminate harmful substances through urination, bowel movements and sweat.
Strict fasting can actually suppress your body’s natural detoxification process, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

What About Severe Calorie Restriction
What if you eat only 500 or 600 calories a day? Although drastically cutting calories can cause rapid weight loss, consuming far less than your body needs can be counterproductive.
Severe calorie restriction can make you feel extremely hungry, deprived, and fatigued. Whats more, it often leads to loss of muscle, or lean mass.2
Generally speaking, the more lean mass you have, the more calories your body burns at rest.3 Loss of muscle during very-low-calorie dieting can slow down metabolism, making future regain much more likely.4
So fast weight loss via severe calorie restriction may not be a good idea for many people.
Its Not A Balanced Diet
Drinking only lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper does not provide enough fiber, protein, fat, vitamins or minerals for your bodys needs.
The World Health Organization advises getting no more than 5% of your daily calories from added sugars, which equals roughly 25 grams per day for the average adult .
Just one serving of the Master Cleanse lemonade contains over 23 grams of sugar, and maple syrup is the main source of calories during the cleanse .
Therefore, the recommended serving of six lemonades per day includes over 138 grams of added sugar.
Interestingly, even though Master Cleanse lemonade is very high in sugar, it does not appear to negatively affect blood sugar levels when consumed in small quantities during a week-long fast .

Sparkling Spirulina Drinks By Ful
Spirulina is one of the most common ingredients used in all kinds of healthy weight-loss diets. It has impressive detoxifying properties due to its excellent nutritional profile. For instance, it has been proven to get rid of heavy metals, which is amazing for people who live in large cities or environments with a lot of pollution.
This algae has also been shown to speed up metabolism, lower appetite, and reduce hunger cravings, making it a perfect supplement for people trying to lose weight. Spirulina also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that benefit your overall health. In fact, spirulina is so good for your health that even astronauts take this supplement!
Unfortunately, spirulina also has some downsides. Besides limiting what you can eat, the plan also calls for getting a “high colonic” at the beginning of the plan and recommends getting lymph drainage massages, cellulite treatment, liver flushes, body wraps, and detoxifying baths. Again, there’s no proof that any of this helps your body.
Limitations: You’re probably going to eat very differently than you did before this diet or after it ends.
Cooking and shopping: You need to keep organic fruits and vegetables on hand, juicing and blending them into drinks and soups. If you donât have the time to do all that juicing and soup making, DeLuz sells supplement powder that you mix with distilled water to create a shake.
Packaged foods or meals? Not required.
In-person meetings? No.
Exercise: DeLuz recommends doing very specific forms of movement, including using a Chi Machine and bouncing on a small trampoline called a rebounder to drain lymphatic fluids. Yoga, stretching, and 1-mile leisure walks are also part of the plan.

Take A Break From Booze
Alcohol may lower inhibitions, which could make you more likely to reach for unhealthy foods, says Keri Gans, RD, Nutritionist, and Author of The Small Change Diet. Anyone who has tossed back a couple of margaritas and some chips and guac at happy hour can relate! Save the booze until after your reboot. Once youre firmly back on track, if you want to reintroduce alcohol in moderation, go for it, she says.
Can Juice Cleanses Help You Lose Weight

Since were willing to bet very few people opt into a temporary diet consisting of just squeezed fruits and veggies for fun, the next question becomes: do juice cleanses help you lose weight? Again, the consensus among the hand full of health experts we talked to was no.
Dr. Josh Axe, D.N.M, C.N.S, D.C and founder of Ancient Nutrition explained that Cleanses are unlikely to lead to long-term weight loss because they dont teach you how to sustainably stick to a healthy, balanced diet. They might lead to some initial weight loss, but the weight is likely to return once someone resumes their normal diet.
He went on to explain that Only drinking juice for several days will also result in calorie deprivation that ultimately leads to a slow down of your metabolic rate. Once your metabolism drops, this makes it harder to lose weight in the long-run.
Alicia Galvin, R.D for Sovereign Laboratories agreed, explaining that juice cleanses are a short-term solution. Initially, you may lose a lot of water weight, but as soon as you start eating again, you will likely gain back that fluid.
Morey also shared that theres very little evidence that juice cleanses help your body detox in any effective way.

What Is A Cleanse
A cleanse is a strategy used to rid your body of toxins. In our day-to-day lives, were exposed to tons of dangerous toxins, from environmental toxins, to toxins in the foods and beverages we consume, to toxins in our home care products. The second phase of the detox diet can last 7 to 14 days and it is characterized by the elimination of accumulated toxins from the urine and stool. To help this elimination, you should eat food that protects and stimulates the liver, like garlic, black tea, green tea, cacao powder, brussel sprouts and onion.
You should prioritize the following foods during this phase:
- Fresh and organic fruits, especially grapes, pomegranate, oranges, apples, plums, lemons and cherries
- Fresh and organic vegetables, especially spinach, onion, garlic, cress, carrot, alfalfa sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, cucumber, lettuce, peppers and tomato
- Grains without gluten, like amaranth, whole wheat rice, corn, buckwheat and quinoa
- Organic legumes, like azuki beans, soybeans, chickpeas, lentils and peas
- Lean protein, like tofu, miso, tempeh, white fish, turkey chicken and eggs
- Healthy fats, like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, coconut, walnuts, cashews, Brazilian nuts, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds
- Herbs and spices like turmeric, mustard seeds, cacao, cinnamon, ginger, pepper, rosemary, thyme and mint
- Natural drinks, like green tea, black tea, matcha, filtered water, coconut water and fruit juices
Just like phase 1, you should also avoid inflammatory foods, gluten, lactose, processed foods and fish or seafood with high qunatities of mercury.
Do They Offer Any Health Benefits
No reliable scientific research exists on weight loss cleanses despite the wide array of health claims that typically accompany them. Most of these statements are marketing taglines that are at best based on anecdotal evidence.
Most weight loss cleanses are low-calorie and brief, and some research supports the notion that short-term, very-low-calorie diets have a positive health impact.
Several studies in people with type 2 diabetes noticed that a VLCD regimen significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels (
5 ).
Keep in mind that many of these health effects are likely to be seen with weight loss in general and not necessarily unique to the VLCD method.
Its well known that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can help treat and prevent various chronic diseases. VLCD methods are just one of many ways to lose weight and may not be ideal for most people.
A VLCD in the form of a weight loss cleanse can be socially isolating and difficult to adhere to, as its far from a long-term, healthy eating pattern.
Additionally, VLCDs in the aforementioned studies were carried out under medical supervision, whereas a weight loss cleanse sold on the internet wont have that advantage.
Many popular cleanses also replace a supportive and balanced approach to healthy living with costly investments in juices, supplements and instruction manuals with little to no evidence backing their effectiveness.

Day Cleanse To Lose 10 Pounds: The Downside Of Losing Weight Faster
According to WebMD, rapid weight loss creates a lot of demands on your body. It can cause serious conditions such as :
- Gallstones. One of the efficient ways to lose water weight is to follow a very low-calorie diet. When you lose such amounts, then you are more likely to have gallstones. This happens in 12% to about 25% of people who lose large amounts of weight in a few months.
- Dehydration. You can avoid this side effect by drinking a lot of water.
