The Basics Of A Skincare Routine
There are three components to focus on when it comes to building a skincare routine: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. From there, you can build in other practices, if desired or needed. This might look like a mask used 1-2 times a week, a serum for a specific need , and an exfoliator .
Lets talk about the role of each component
How Often Should I Exfoliate
As explained above, exfoliation removes the top layer of dead skin cells and exposes the delicate, sensitive skin underneath. That can be great for your looks, but it can make your skin more susceptible to damage from environmental factors like pollution and the suns UV rays.
Thats why we recommend exfoliating your face, neck, and chest only once per week. Restricting this part of your skincare routine to once every five to seven days gives your new skin time to build up some defense against the environmental factors that work to tear it down.
But sometimes, even exfoliating daily or once a week can do more harm than good if you have the wrong exfoliant. But what makes one exfoliant better than another? Well answer that question in the next section.

What Certifications Should I Look For
Sifting through a sea of certification to choose the best skincare product for you can be daunting. So, we have deconstructed the most common certifications that youd see on a bottle of face cleanser.
· USDA Organic: In the US, the US Department of Agriculture regulates the term organic. If a cosmetic meets the set criteria it is eligible to be labelled under one of the categories. A 100% organic product contains only organically produced ingredients . A product labelled Organic means it contains at least 95% of organic ingredients , while Made with Organic Ingredients implies it contains a minimum of 70% organic ingredients
· MADE SAFE: This nontoxic seal certifies that products are made using ingredients safe for human health, avoiding over 6,500 nasties such as heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, endangered plants, high risk pesticides and more.
· COSMOS-standard:The COSMOS Organic and Natural Standard for organic and natural cosmetics has been developed by five global certification bodies, including French Ecocert and UKs Soil Association. In a COSMOS ORGANIC certified product, at least 95% of its plant ingredients are organic and the product contains a minimum of 20% of organic ingredients . Whereas COSMOS NATURAL means that even though the cosmetic in question complies with the standards, it does not contain the minimum amount of organic ingredients as per criteria.
Dont: Go Straight For The Washcloth
Scrubbing can strip the skin of its natural protective barrier. The best way to clean skin is using fingertips, at least a minute or two.
To exfoliate, look for ingredients in your cleansers that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid or fruit enzymes, says Dr. Haley.
Letting these products work their way into the skin for 60 to 90 seconds will do the job, or clearing pores and removing dead skin cells to provide a healthy glow.

How Is It Processed
Just because ingredients are derived naturally, it doesnt mean theyre processed naturally.
Ingredients can be processed physically or chemically.
- Processed physically means the molecular composition or structure stays the same.
- Processed chemically means the molecular composition or structure changes.
Examples of naturally derived but physically processed ingredients include raw, unrefined oils and butters. These are processed through means like cold-pressing or filtration.
An example of a naturally derived but chemically processed ingredient would be castor wax. Its a vegetable wax derived from the castor bean produced by adding hydrogen to pure castor oil, a process called hydrogenation.
Natural Diy Face Wash Options
Cleaning your face naturally is a great option that is more kind and gentler on your skin. Remember, your face is a very delicate part of your body! If you are looking for some gentle and natural face wash options, here a few to try!
- Oil-cleansing method. There are many oils that can be used during this method but some of the ones that people tend to use are olive oil and avocado oil. It’s a simple process where you wash your face gently with a warm washcloth, allowing your pores to be cleaned and upon, then gently massage the oil on your face. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean.
- Cleansing Milk method. Do your research on what you feel is the best cleaning milk option for you, and then apply directly on your face, wipe it off once done and then take a warm washcloth and clean off your face where you applied the lotion.
- Gentle Facial Cleanser. Be choosy when deciding on the best facial cleanser! You don’t want one that is full of chemicals and it needs to also moisturize your face as well.
- DIY Makeup Remover Wipes

Skin Care Routine For Sensitive Skin
The skincare routine for sensitive skin should contain products that are non-irritating and specially formulated for sensitive skin.
Use a gentle sulfate-free cleansing lotion that does not lather or foam to wash your face in the morning. This will help get rid of dirt without irritating your skin.
You may or may not use toners for sensitive skin. If you use toners, look for products specifically designed for sensitive skin. Avoid alcohol, fragrances, artificial dye, essential oils, and other chemical irritants. Instead, use products that contain green and white tea extracts, chamomile, and beta-glucan, as they are anti-inflammatory and help reinforce your skins barrier.
3. Facial Mist
You may spritz a hydrating and gentle facial mist. This helps to calm your skin. Pick a mist that has a hydrating formula.
Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic is the way to go when shopping for a moisturizer for sensitive skin. This will keep your skin hydrated without irritating it.
Pick a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide. This ingredient is less likely to irritate your skin.
Use the same cleanser that you use in the morning.
Use the same toner that you use in the morning.
Pick a serum that has hydrating and calming ingredients. Choose one that is specially formulated for sensitive skin. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and organic ingredients, such as chamomile and calendula oils.
Apple Cider Vinegar As An Exfoliant
Apple cider vinegar contains natural alphahydroxy acids, which help loosen dead skin cells so they will naturally slough off more easily. And like all the other exfoliators on this list, using apple cider vinegar couldnt be easier. Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and rub it on your face, neck, and chest with circular motions after washing as usual.

Supplements For Skin Care
Im firmly convinced that what you put in your body is just as important than what you put on it when it comes to skin health. A natural skincare routine should include a healthy diet. I used to have terrible acne. Since changing my diet and supplements, I dont break out at all and my past scars have healed. The supplements that seemed to have made the biggest difference in skin health for me are:
- Fish Oil for vitamins A, D, and K, omega-3s, and antioxidants, all of which are great for the skin
- Gelatin a pre-cursor for collagen, gelatin has made my hair, skin, and nails noticeably stronger and smoother
- Magnesium an anti-inflammatory and lacking in many peoples diets. Topical magnesium oil seems to be the most effective for skin health.

Creating A Skincare Routine On Any Budget
Lets talk about some options that Ive personally tried and loved for cleansers, toners, moisturizers.
I think its great to experiment with options. Just because a product is natural or non-toxic and made with nourishing ingredients doesnt mean its right for your skin. What works amazing for one person may not be amazing for you. Skin is incredibly unique and its important to get to know what your skin loves and also what it doesnt love.
When it comes to store-bought options, here are my recommendations for experimenting with products without spending a ton of money
When looking for a non-toxic skincare product, choose a product made by a company thats transparent about ingredients. A company should be proud of the ingredients used and should clearly state these ingredients on packaging and their website. A company shouldnt hide behind mysterious words like fragrance. Instead, a company should be willing to share exactly whats in a product and how its made.
Ive tried a lot of different brands and homemade products over the years. I dont want to leave you hanging when it comes to creating a skincare routine. I thought it would be helpful to leave you with a few product recommendations. Since you can develop a skincare routine on any budget, lets talk about high, middle, and low price range recommendations. Low is up to $15, middle is between $15-30, and high is over $30.
Why Should You Follow A Natural Skincare Routine
Using natural and organic products are highly sustainable in nature as they are manufactured in a way to get easily absorbed into the environment, without causing any harm.
Not only are natural skincare products gentle on your skin, but they also ensure lesser damage. An organic skincare routine also reflects long-lasting effects on your skin, by giving you naturally flawless skin and ensuring that your skin stays that way.

Use The Right Cleanser
You are already aware of a cleansers basic function. Now let us look at the different ingredients in cleansers that are meant for treating oily skin issues.
A. Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid increases your cell turnover rate by exfoliating the upper damaged layer of skin. This helps bring to surface clogged pores, acne lesions and trapped oil. Speeding up your cell turnover rate expedites your skins healing process giving you a soft, smooth appearance. Choose a cleanser which has a low concentration as too much salicylic acid can dry up your skin.
B. Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid too exfoliates your skin, removes excess oil and prevents clogging of your skin pores. However, it is more gentle compared to salicylic acid making it suitable for inclusion in skincare routine for oily sensitive skin.
Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 is advised for oily skin that has an acne problem. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, niacinamide is often used in anti-acne products. Use a cleanser that has a low percentage of niacinamide as some skin types may react to it.
Retinol cleansers are great for reversing skin damage. They prevent wrinkles, age spots, clogged pores and acne. Regular use can quickly reveal healthy, young skin in no time. However, it is always safe to use one with a low percentage of retinol to give your skin time to adjust to the new product.

How To Create Your Own Non

A few weeks ago, I shared my current non-toxic skincare routine.
Today, lets talk about creating your own skincare routine using non-toxic products. I believe caring for and nourishing the skin, our bodys largest organ, is important. I also believe this can be done on any budget.
Keep in mind, Im not a skincare expert. I didnt go to school for any skincare related fields. I went to school to be a teacher. After teaching for a number of years, I had a baby and started a blog about real fooda new journey for us. As our diet changed, we also began making changes to the kind of cleaning and body products we purchased and used.
I didnt always have a healthy relationship with my skin. For a number of years, I dealt with adult acne from hormonal, stress, and gut issues. Over the past few years, Ive been learning how to care for my skin, naturally. Ive read books, listened to podcasts with skincare experts and functional medicine doctors, been on the receiving end of facials and skin treatments , and experimented with various products.
I was never taught how to care for my skin as a teen and young adult. I thought skincare was about applying a bunch of makeup and hiding everything underneath. Now I know that isnt the answer. The answer is to care for and nourish the skin.
