Face Cleansing Routine For Oily Skin

Cleanse In The Am And Pm

Skincare Routine for Brightening Oily Skin | Sephora

The most important step of any skin care routine is cleansing your skin.

And if your skin tends to be oily, you can likely tolerate more cleansing, says Dr. Sandra Lee, aka Dr. Pimple Popper, founder of SLMD Skincare.

Though most people should be washing their face morning and night, its especially important for those with oily skin to give their face a complete cleanse in the morning, Lee says.

Even though you might feel like your skin is still clean from the night before, Lee says that during the night your skin is busy shedding skin cells and producing oils.

Thats why washing with a good exfoliating cleanser, both in the morning and evening, is recommended.

She likes to use a cleanser or wash with salicylic acid.

This is going to really help clear away excess oil and dead skin to prevent buildup in the pores, Lee adds.

Once your skin is clean and free from any makeup, dirt, and oil, Lee suggests you follow with an exfoliating toner that contains either:

  • salicylic acid

This step will depend on your specific skin concerns. But in general, if youre prone to acne, Lee says you should be using benzoyl peroxide or sulfur in the daytime to help curb oil production and prevent breakouts.

In the evening, Lee recommends a retinol product to help keep pores clear and skin glowing.

Some of her favorite treatment products from her skin care line include BP Lotion, Sulfur Lotion, and Retinol Serum.

Best Ingredients For Oily Skin

When shopping for your products, its super important to pay attention to the main ingredients in a product. If you have oily skin, you want to look for products with the following ingredients:

  • Squalane – It mimics the sebum your skin naturally produces, which you may think you dont want, but it actually helps to balance your skins natural oils, which is exactly what you do want!
  • Rosemary Extract – Rosemary helps to naturally cleanse your pores.
  • Aloe Vera – One of the best natural hydrating ingredients, aloe adds moisture to your skin while also helping to remove buildup on your skin.
  • Rose Oil – Used for centuries to help improve the look of skin, rose oil cleanses skin, minimizes the look of pores, and naturally hydrates!
  • Clary Sage – Clary Sage acts as a natural toner and helps eliminate overly-dry or overly-oily skin.
  • Activated Coconut Charcoal – It gives skin and pores a deep cleansing without stripping your skin of nutrients.
  • Bentonite and Kaolin Clay – Clays are super beneficial for balancing oils, soothing skin, and improving texture.
  • Tea Tree Oil – This essential oil helps to cleanse dirt and oil from pores and calm skin.
  • Hyaluronic Acid – Hyaluronic acid helps to balance moisture in your skin.
  • Retinol – Also known as vitamin A, retinol helps to cleanse skin of dead skin cells unclogging pores.

How Do I Keep My Face From Getting Oily Throughout The Day

To keep your skin oil-free throughout the day, include an alcohol free toner in your daily skincare routine. You can also do a gentle ice rub after or before applying your moisturizer. This calms your skin and prevents excess oil secretion. During the day use blotting paper or simply wash your face with plain water when it gets oily.

The Last Word

Maintaining oily skin can often seem like a challenge due its susceptibility to acne and infections. However, a good day and night skincare routine for oily skin that is mentioned in this article, can reduce more than half of your skin worries. Sticking to herbal skincare products, including an Ayurveda recommended diet and leading a stress-free, active lifestyle goes a long way in maintaining good skin health.

With a night cream containing niacinamide, which can help calm the skin while you sleep, plus hyaluronic acid and ceramides, you can help your skin hold on to moisture and restore the skin’s barrier all while you sleep. We recommend a non-comedogenic nighttime moisturizer like CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, which is formulated with all three of these ingredients and wont clog pores or cause acne flare-ups.

Why Is My Face Oily

Daily Cleansing Routine for Oily

Oily skin can come from a multitude of factors: hormonal fluctuations, medications, environmental factors like humidity and even certain skin care products. And sometimes it just comes down to genetics.

In some cases, however, you might be accidentally causing your oily skin by over-washing. The same can happen if youve tried to avoid using moisturizers in an attempt to decrease shine.

People with oily skin sometimes think they dont need a moisturizer, but thats not true, says Artistry Beauty Squad expert Jenn Dockendorf. In fact, dehydrated skin may end up producing even more oil.

It sounds counterintuitive, but if you over dry your skin with frequent washing or drying toners, you strip it of the natural oils it needs to stay moisturized and supple. As a result, your body overproduces oil to make up for the loss.

If that sounds like you, try giving your harsh routine a break and see if things calm down. Then, try introducing a more gentle skin care routine that focuses on decreasing oil and shine without over drying.

For many people, cleansing brings to mind foamy lather and rinsing.

Oil cleansing can include both, but for the most part its done with pure oils and a washcloth dampened with warm water.

Some women, particularly those who adhere to a K-beauty regimen, will also follow their oil cleanse with a gentle face wash to remove any oil residue.

K-beauty is short for Korean beauty, an umbrella term for Korean skin care products and techniques that have become popular in the United States.

The basic idea behind slathering your face in oils in the name of cleaning is that like dissolves like. In other words, putting clean, nourishing oils on your skin is intended to:

    • lift excess sebum, the oily substance produced by glands on your skin
    • clean out clogged pores like blackheads and whiteheads
    • remove dead skin, pollutants, and makeup

Makeup removers often include oil because its well-suited for lifting oil-free, oil-based, and waterproof formulas off the skin and lashes.

Traditional cleansers can irritate the skin, cause excessive dryness, , and ultimately result in the skin overproducing oil after washing. Oil cleansing, on the other hand, can help balance the skin and lock in hydration.

Oils used for cleansing may also have healing properties, important nutrients, or other skin-boosting benefits.

While theres currently little research on oil cleansing, a small 2010 study found that cleansing oil was good for dry, mature skin.

How Do I Know If I Have Oily Skin

Think about how your face looks and feels at the end of the day. Does your skin look shiny or greasy? Do the pores around your t-zone look enlarged? Does makeup seem to melt off your face by the end of the day?

If so, you probably have oily skin. Another possible sign: frequent breakouts. Overproduction of oil means it can get trapped in your pores and breed bacteria.

  • Cleanser
  • Even if you stay indoors the whole day, you still need to get rid of the dirt and gunk clogged into your pores from the environment. If you have worn a full- face of makeup during the day, you can double cleanse your face to leave no makeup residue behind.

If you have acne- prone skin, make sure your cleanser in the oily skincare routine is free from any alcohol as it will further irritate your skin.

  • Toner
  • Just as a morning toner, you need to add a toner in the night-time oily skincare routine as well to balance the right amount of hydration and also fight skin acne. Toner with white tea and rose can help combat acne- prone skin while gentle toners can retain moisture into your freshly cleansed face.

  • Moisturiser
  • Moisturising is the key to waking up with supple and soft skin in the morning.

If your moisturiser includes ingredients that can smoothen out your skin discolouration, infuse moisture, and create balance of sebum production, you need to apply it every time before hitting the bed.

  • Eye cream
  • Most of us experience discolouration around the eyes and also wake up to puffy looking eyes. Since your skin around the eyes is sensitive, look for natural ingredients that leave a lasting and calming effect on your skin. Eye cream with caffeine can help calm your skin very well. If you are all about natural ingredients, you can apply aloe vera gel as well.

    What Is Oily Skin

Oily skin is a skin type characterized by overactive sebaceous glands and enlarged facial pores. While itâs primarily a result of genetics, oily skin may be exacerbated by other factors such as hormonal imbalances, humid climates, incompatible skincare products, outside stressors, and even diet. Excess sebum and dead skin cells can combine to clog pores, leading to breakouts.

Combination skin types also have enlarged pores, but theyâre concentrated in the T-zone the forehead and nose. If your skin is more oily in your T-zone than anywhere else, you likely have combination skin.
