How Common Is Atopic Dermatitis In India
The Indian journal of Dermatology estimates that Atopic dermatitis currently affects nearly 15% of the population in India and has been increasingly rising with time . Studies from developed countries indicate that treatment and management of Atopic dermatitis is a significant burden on health care budgets. The condition almost always starts in childhood and can continue throughout adulthood flaring and subsiding on and off.
Researchers across the world have called Atopic dermatitis a costly and expensive disease, both emotionally and financially. An estimate in UK suggests that parents spent 47 million pounds to manage Atopic dermatitis among children between 1 5 in one year alone : 75% of this went towards OTC prescription creams, ointments and soaps to manage this condition.
Costs in India are also high. The Indian journal of Dermatology estimates that Atopic dermatitis is as expensive a disease as chronic Adult Diabetes with high recurring costs. A recent study in an OP department of a hospital estimated that parents spent Rs. 12000 annually to manage Atopic dermatitis which was about 15% of their stated family income! This estimate increases with an increase in severity of the disease. In countries like Australia, severe Atopic dermatitis cost families nearly $1225 annually .

She Keeps Her Cleanser Simple
“I love starting my morning with a simple cleanser such as Cetaphil or Cerave. We usually dont need anything too active or aggressive in the morning . One tip is not to wash the face with hot water. A lot of people think that hot water works better or gets rid of acne causing bacteria but thats not true. In fact it strips a lot of our natural oils. Washing the face with lukewarm or cooler water actually has benefits including de-puffing and its a good way to wake up!”
Should I Treat Facial Eczema Differently Than I Would Eczema On My Body
Yes. Both Sadick and Shah recommend using milder products on your face because the skin is thinner and more sensitive than the skin on your body. “I would use eczema skin-care products designed for face and body respectively as they contain different concentrations of active ingredients,” says Sadick.
Adam Friedman, an associate professor of dermatology at George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C., recommends using weaker topical steroids or steroid-sparing ingredients, like pimecrolimus, tacrolimus, and crisaborol, as he says, “facial skin is more sensitive to the skin thinning and lightening effect of topical steroids.”

What To Look For
1. Shea butter, glycerin, and lanolin. These moisturizing ingredients repair your skin and help it look healthier. Look for skin care products that list one of these first, second, or third on the ingredients list.
2. Hyaluronic acid. It helps draw moisture from the air to your skin. Smooth on cream with hyaluronic acid for an extra boost of moisture and to ease flaky, dry skin.
3. Niacinamide. If red patches show through no matter how many layers of makeup you pile on, try a serum or cream that has this compound, also called vitamin B3. It can reduce redness from eczema by strengthening your skinâs natural barrier. Apply niacinamide cream first, then put on cosmetics.

How To Build A Smart Skin
To calm aggravated skin due to atopic dermatitis, follow a personalized regimen every day, not just during flare-ups.
If youre living with eczema, you know that what you do or don’t apply to your skin can affect whether red, dry, and itchy skin stays at bay. But sometimes figuring out which products are safe for you takes some trial and error.
The right skin-care routine can help support skin functioning in eczema, but the wrong one can make matters worse, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
The most common form of eczema is the itchy skin condition called atopic dermatitis, according to the National Eczema Association . Unlike contact dermatitis, which can be blamed on a specific irritant or allergen, atopic eczema has no defined cause. It appears to be indirectly related to allergies because it’s common in people who have respiratory allergy symptoms such as asthma, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology .
Eczema needs to be managed with the right treatment from the time it first appears, which, for between 80 and 90 percent of those who have it, is in the first five years of life, according to statistics from the NEA and the ACAAI.

Proper Skin Care For Eczema Focuses On Hydrating And Soothing While Minimizing Irritation
Hydration is the operative word when putting together an eczema skin-care routine. We know that in eczema the skin barrier is not working the way it should be, so it is important to maintain skin hydration, says Dr. Zeichner.
Soothing is the other operative word. Look for products that are specifically made for sensitive skin, says Wu. These are usually free of fragrance and other ingredients known to aggravate eczema, including lanolin. Skip unscented products, which may contain a masked fragrance and could irritate your skin, and opt for a product labeled dye-free, notes the American Academy of Dermatology.
Also, avoid retinol, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy or salicylic acids, as these can aggravate eczema, advises Wu. The National Eczema Association, for example, says that while retinol is beneficial for anti-aging, it can trigger eczema flares. One beneficial ingredient to look for is hyaluronic acid, which holds moisture against your skin without being irritating. Past research shows that a hyaluronic acidceramide foam may help improve the symptoms of mild to moderate eczema.
Another note: You can wear makeup if you have eczema just do your best to look for products that are fragrance-free, adds Zeichner.
Who Gets Atopic Dermatitis On The Face
Children frequently suffer with facial atopic dermatitis. Up to 19 percent of children in the U.S. develop AD within the first few months of life. Symptoms usually appear on the cheeks and neck before moving to other parts of the body, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians .
Children often develop atopic dermatitis on the face.
One member worries about her 7-month-old son. He has terrible, severe eczema all over his face and ears that oozes all day! she said. In older children, the entire face and eyelids can be impacted.
Among adults, facial atopic dermatitis can occur as part of generalized eczema or as an isolated event, according to the National Eczema Society. Symptoms may last for just a week or two, or longer. Theres usually no identifiable cause, but triggers can include a history of atopic dermatitis, contact with an external irritant or allergen , or even a change in weather. Allergy testing can also determine if the AD is an allergic reaction.
Because AD is a chronic and relapsing disease, it can return at any age. My eczema has been in ‘hibernation mode’ since I was a teenager. This year, however, big red-hot patches suddenly appeared on my neck and started moving down my body, said one member.
