Facial Cleanser For Perioral Dermatitis

First Off What Can Cause Perioral Dermatitis

My Skincare Routine for Perioral Dermatitis

Every doctor Ive talked to and article Ive read has said it can be hard to completely pinpoint it on something.

With that said, there are a few common things that can cause it.

  • Stress
  • Exposure to Harsh Temps
  • Birth Control Pills

Not every trigger will be a trigger for everyone, but the five ingredients below are common triggers for people.

Childhood Granulomatous Perioral Dermatitis

CGPD is a rare variant often seen in children with dark-coloured skin. It was previously termed FACE . However, it has since been renamed as it has been observed in children with light-colour skin and those not of Afro-Caribbean heritage.

Patients present with skin-coloured, red or yellow-brown monomorphic, dome-shaped papules. There is typically a lack of pustules and vesicles in CGPD, and erythema and scaling are less prominent than in classic POD. Additionally, the histological features between CGPD and POD are different.

Extra-orificial skin can also be affected with an eruption on the neck, chest, and extremities, in addition to conjunctivitis and blepharitis.

What Is The Difference Between Perioral Dermatitis And Acne

Perioral dermatitis can sometimes be confused with acne. However, perioral dermatitis is not acne.

Acne differs from perioral dermatitis as acne causes comedones whereas perioral dermatitis does not. The spots in acne also tend to be larger and deeper. There may be cysts and scars. Spots are usually on the jawline, cheeks and forehead.

Perioral dermatitis does not usually cause scars in the same way that acne can .

It is possible to have both acne and perioral dermatitis at the same time.

Who Gets Atopic Dermatitis On The Face

Children frequently suffer with facial atopic dermatitis. Up to 19 percent of children in the U.S. develop AD within the first few months of life. Symptoms usually appear on the cheeks and neck before moving to other parts of the body, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians .

Children often develop atopic dermatitis on the face.

One member worries about her 7-month-old son. He has terrible, severe eczema all over his face and ears that oozes all day! she said. In older children, the entire face and eyelids can be impacted.

Among adults, facial atopic dermatitis can occur as part of generalized eczema or as an isolated event, according to the National Eczema Society. Symptoms may last for just a week or two, or longer. Theres usually no identifiable cause, but triggers can include a history of atopic dermatitis, contact with an external irritant or allergen , or even a change in weather. Allergy testing can also determine if the AD is an allergic reaction.

Because AD is a chronic and relapsing disease, it can return at any age. My eczema has been in hibernation mode since I was a teenager. This year, however, big red-hot patches suddenly appeared on my neck and started moving down my body, said one member.

Best Face Wash for Perioral Dermatitis

Before my diagnosis, I was a Korean 10-Step Beauty Routine believer. Every morning and night, I used a toner, two serums, a face oil, two more serums, eye cream, and a moisturizer. I also supplemented this routine with face masks and sleeping masks.

What I didn’t realize was my skincare routine was doing the opposite of taking care of my skin it was the primary cause of my issue.

A big irritant for perioral dermatitis sufferers is thick products and products with fragrances.

Once I simplified my skincare routine, my skin cleared up. I havent had any issues since.

Heres the skin care routine I recommend for perioral dermatitis relief.

    Treament Of Perioral Dermatitis

Immediately stop using any harsh products such as alkaline soaps, foaming cleansers or toners, and exfoliators/scrubs. The area should be cleaned using either a Micellar watercleanser or a very mild cream cleanser for sensitive skin but only once a day, preferably at night.

If potent topical steroid creams have been used around the mouth this should be stopped immediately. However, on stopping the potent topical corticosteroid creams, perioral dermatitis could get worse before it gets better. These potent topical steroid creams should never be used again in this area as their use will cause a relapse.

Topical prescription medications would include Erythromycin, Clindamycin, Metronidazole, and Tacrolimus.

Non-prescription treatments would include products that contain Azelaic acid and flavonoid polyphenols such as Resveratrol. Apply a moisturiser that helps to restore the normal epidermal barrier function of the skin and look for ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide,Centella Asiatica extract, Ceramides, Cholesterol, and Free fatty acids. What you need to know about banishing that red rash around your mouth.

Noticed a red rash around your mouth or nose? It could be something called perioral dermatitis. ‘A very common skin condition, perioral dermatitis mainly affects young women , but can occur in both genders and in children, too,’ says Dr Alexis Granite, CeraVe consultant dermatologist.

Despite experts reporting a recent rise in cases, the skin condition remains relatively unknown. I, like many others, first heard about perioral dermatitis when model Hailey Bieber shared her experience on Instagram in 2020. Biebers candid approach to the skin condition helped me to make my own self-diagnosis late last year. What started as a small red patch under my left nostril quickly spread around my mouth and chin, staying put for weeks.

While it has a persistent and recurring nature, dermatologists assure me that there are several steps you can take to help heal perioral dermatitis many of which, I can attest to.

POD is a clinical diagnosis. Other investigations that may be used are:

    • Swabs and skin scrapings for culture and potassium hydroxide testing to exclude bacterial and fungal infections.
    • Skin biopsy where there is diagnostic uncertainty and may reveal:
    • Perivascular and perifollicular inflammation with oedema and lymphocytic infiltrates
    • Epidermal spongiosis
    • Follicularabscesses in severe cases.

CGPD characteristically shows perifollicular and upper dermal tissue containing noncaseating granulomas surrounded by lymphocytes and often giant cells. Again, epidermal spongiosis may be present.

Ive read countless medical journals on the relationship between zinc deficiency and perioral dermatitis flare-ups. In the 1980s, The Journal of Reproductive Medicine published a study showing that the use of oral contraceptives decreases physiologic levels of six nutrients, and one of them is zinc. Many women Ive talked to say that their birth control caused their PD to flare-up, and zinc deficiency could be one of the reasons. I take oral birth control, so I make sure to supplement with as much zinc as possible.

    She Keeps Her Cleanser Simple

I love starting my morning with a simple cleanser such as Cetaphil or Cerave. We usually dont need anything too active or aggressive in the morning . One tip is not to wash the face with hot water. A lot of people think that hot water works better or gets rid of acne causing bacteria but thats not true. In fact it strips a lot of our natural oils. Washing the face with lukewarm or cooler water actually has benefits including de-puffing and its a good way to wake up!

    Topical And Oral Antibiotics

How to CLEAR SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS on the face| Dr Dray

According to Zamani, first line treatments for perioral dermatitis often include one of the below options:

    • ‘Topical antibiotics are helpful for their anti-inflammatory properties and can include metronidazole, clindamycin, and erythromycin.’
    • ‘Topical sulphur preparations and azelaic acid gel.’ Several studies have found that azelaic acid is effective in treating inflammation.
    • ‘Topical calcineurin inhibitors like tacrolimus ointment or pimecrolimus cream can be effective.’ A calcineurin inhibitor works with the immune system to block the chemicals that can contribute to a perioral dermatitis flare-up.

‘If topical therapies do not resolve perioral dermatitis, oral antibiotics can be added daily for an extended period of time,’ says Zamani. Patience is key, however, as topical therapies may not show peak efficacy for three months of daily use. ‘Oral antibiotics can be used for three months or longer if the symptoms are not controlled with topical therapies,’ adds Zamani.

A New Era: In The Clear

I didnât want to believe Kane when I first saw her, and in fact, I didn’t. After the antibiotics she prescribed me cleared up my skin, I went back to many of the products I was using before. And sure enough, I had another flare-up. It was at this moment I realized I needed to change everything.

“One way to treat this is with zero therapy, which means you put nothing on your faceâlike no products at all,” Kane adds. “I always tell people it’s not a popular option because your skin will go through a very dry and uncomfortable phase and won’t look great, but that actually is one way to get the bumps to go down. I always tell people this because I think it drives home the point that products can trigger the reaction.”

When I finally listened to my doctor and simplified my skincare regimen down to the brass tacks, my skin almost immediately cleared up.

“The thing I have to remind patients about is once you’ve had it, you’re sort of always prone to potentially getting a flare of it in the future, so you’ll have to be careful in terms of your product selection,” Kane warns.

“I tell people, once you get your skin clear and you’re at the point where you’re wanting to reintroduce things, you can always pick one product and try it out. You’ll want to wait a couple of weeks and see how your skin responds.”

Keep reading to see the products I used that cleared my skin and what I’ve been slowly reintroducing to my regimen now that I’ve been in the clear for more than six months.

Steroid Treatments Such As Hydrocortisone Creams

Just like antifungal creams, hydrocortisone and other steroid creams might seem like a great option because they are fairly inexpensive and easily available.

Hydrocortisone is a common ingredient in creams that treats rashes and itching. If you have a tube or bottle of any kind of anti-itch lotion at home, it probably contains hydrocortisone.

These creams cant be used to treat perioral dermatitis. In fact, in some cases, overuse of these creams could be causing your rash. When you stop using hydrocortisone cream, your rash will get worse for a few days. This doesnt mean you should resume using the cream. Your skin will readjust after a few days and can begin to heal.

Its never a good idea to use any kind of steroid cream on perioral dermatitis. This includes steroid creams youve been prescribed by a doctor.

If youre currently using a prescription cream and developed perioral dermatitis, let the doctor who prescribed the steroid cream know. Theyll be able to stop or adjust your prescription.
