How Can You Spot An Unsafe Cleanse
Like most things, not all juice cleanses are created equal. As such, it helps to know what to keep an eye out for. Namely, you want to look for cleanses made with organic and local produce whenever possible to avoid consuming pesticides. Think of how many heads of celery it takes to make a 16-ounce juice, Weil says. If you are using chemical-laden produce this is just so counter to any of the reasons one would do a cleanse in the first place.
Additionally, you want to steer clear of sugar-laden formulas, as they can lead to weight gain and can be problematic for diabetics.
Lastly, Weil says that you should stay away from a cleanse that attempts to limit your calories in juices or maintains overly-strict guidelines . A juice cleanse should be flexibleeveryone will experience it differently and has unique needs, she notes.
You Lose A Little Muscle Mass
Juicing fruits and vegetables can actually strip out vitamins and minerals like Vitamin D, E, B, essential fatty acids, and fiber, particularly if you’re filtering the pulp out of the juice. “If food consumption is restricted to purely juicing, the body could be void of protein, which could make maintaining muscle mass difficult,” says White.
Your Breath May Stink
This one is so interesting that it’s almost comical. “Your breath may smell bad because saliva production decreases because our bodies conserve saliva in hopes of eating food,” says Schapiro. “Saliva is only emitted when we consume food. When saliva production is low, bacteria builds up. Eating food can solve the problem because our salivary glands are stimulated when we chew.”

What To Expect On Day 2 Of A 3 Day Juice Cleanse
After making it through the first day of your cleanse, you should feel accomplished, proud, and maybe a bit lighter. However, be prepared, because day two can sometimes be the most difficult day for cleansers.
While you can expect to wake up feeling lighter, and most likely not craving a meal since your digestive system is no longer working hard to breakdown meals from the previous day, caffeine withdrawal may cause intense headaches and sluggishness on day two. If your body was particularly in need of a detox before your cleanse, you may experience excessive sweating, tiredness, irritability or anxiousness. Its important to understand these potential detox side effects before starting your cleanse, so you can be better prepared to handle them when they arise.
If you do experience some uncomfortable symptoms, be sure to drink plenty of water to help flush toxins faster. Day two is a great time to treat yourself to a meditation class or sauna session. If you become extremely hungry during the day and have already consumed your scheduled juice and plenty of water, you can have a handful of raw almonds to help settle your stomach.
Keep in mind that, because there is no fiber or protein in your body to increase absorption, you may need to make more frequent trips to the bathroom during your cleanse. Dont be alarmed. This is normal and healthy during your cleanse.
How Often Should You Do A Juice Detox

A juice cleanse resets your body, but dont overdo a good thing. If you love the results of a dedicated 3-day juice cleanse, then detoxing once a month is a good rule of thumb if you are a healthy person. However, it can vary depending on your lifestyle, so if you are in doubt, have a chat with your doctor who knows your family history about the frequency of your juice detox.

Avoid Strenuous Or High
Skip the high-impact exercises like sprints, High-Intensity Interval Training , Tabata, or long strength training sessions during your juice cleanse. We understand this may be tempting, especially if this type of training is part of your regular routine. However, placing too much impact on the body while consuming fewer calories may lead to feelings of fatigue, weakness, or dehydration. You may also be putting yourself at a higher risk of injury if you are pushing yourself too hard and too quickly, since the body does not have enough energy to keep up or optimally recover. Take this time to slow down, listen to your body, and be a little more gentle on yourself.
You Can Heal Your Cells
This is less about the juice cleanse and more about what can happen when you go vegan. “Switching to an organic, plant-based diet allows cells to work optimally to re-establish efficient internal messaging and manufacturing processes,” says Merrell. “This allows the mitochondria to create energy without having to fight off a plethora of free radicals and inflammation, and reduces some of the impediments to proper DNA functioning.”

Are Juice Cleanses Healthy
First off, lets clarify what we mean by a juice cleanse. A cleanse is typically a 2-5 day period where you only consume juices. Some may just be fruits and vegetables, others may include healthy fats like nuts and avocado. Regardless, a cleanse typically means youre primarily consuming juice for an extended period of time.
For the most part, the nutrition experts we interviewed were not supportive of juice cleanses as a strategy for healthy living long term.
Kristian Morey, a Registered Dietician at the Endocrinology Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD explains that Juices are often made of healthy ingredients fruits and vegetables which are essential components of good nutrition. But in and of themselves, they do not provide your body with all essential nutrients.
Relying solely on juiced fruits and vegetables also neglects another nutrient your body needs protein. In order for your body to continuously rebuild and repair its tissues, it must have a constant source of amino acids to pull from. If your body isnt getting them from the food youre eating, its going to get them from your own muscles. As we lose muscle mass, our calorie burning capacity lowers, making it harder and harder to lose weight.
You Might Get A Little Depressed
While fruits and vegetables contain many different nutrients that are beneficial to your body, the juices you drink will not contain much in the form of protein, healthy fat, or fiber. “Your brain won’t be getting enough fatty acids,” says Kaufman. “This can result in you feeling depressed and sad since omega-3s, which are known to increase serotonin levels. And because you won’t be getting enough protein, your muscle mass will decrease and you will not have much energy.”

How My Three Day Juice Cleanse Became An Exercise In Self Love
In three days, I drank a ton of juice and got a lot of mental clarity.
As an athlete, Ive always been pretty healthy. Until recently.
I grew up on a plant-based diet that fueled me through rigorous martial arts classes, with access to fresh baked Kale chips at home before Kale chips were even cool . This lifelong interest in health led me to work in fitness, and Ive spent the past 6 years helping others become their best selves. As a passionate coach, Im always reading about new trends in the health and wellness space like juicing.
However, my interest in juicing wasnt entirely in the pursuit of health.
It has been a rough spring for me, and in the months prior to juicing I found myself losing all of my healthy habits. Working out no longer became an option when I was faced with one health crisis after another, and the loss of my grandfather was a much more painful experience than I was ready for. The mindful way I once made choices for my body was lost.
When I finally came to the realization that I had let myself go, it was an emotional blow that I was unprepared to deal with in a healthy way.
So I figured, hey! Ill drink juice for three days to kickstart my new, overly-ambitious diet and workout regimen that I would never recommend to any client, ever. Fortunately, it gave me the wake up call that I needed.
The result of my juice cleanse was an exercise in self-love that I realized was the real ingredient I had been starving for.
Leave The Fitness Tracker Behind
We know how exciting and motivating it can be to see how many calories youve burned in a day, or how many steps youve taken. While cleansing, we advise that you ditch the fitness tracker so you wont feel pressured to do more than you should. Dont worryyou can get right back to tracking once your cleanse is complete!
Dont feel pressured to work out while youre cleansing. Just because exercise is part of your regular routine, its perfectly fine to take a break while cleansing. If youre not consuming enough calories, it may be safer to skip the workout altogether and focus on detoxing your body through the cleanse itself.
Easing back into your exercise routine
Although youll feel refreshed after your juice cleanse, your energy levels may not be back up to normal just yetthis may take a few extra days. We recommend slowly easing yourself back into your workout routine to prevent injuries or increased fatigue. Start with gentle movement, like yoga, walking, stretching, or swimming before you engage in heavy and more intense forms of exercise. Its important to allow your body the time to build back the energy stores that it may have lost over the course of your juice cleanse.

If Your Goal Is To Deeply Detox Cleanse + Nourish Your Body
The most commonly suggested approach from health care providers is to take it easy while on a juice cleanse. This is because your body is consuming less calories and less protein than usual, which can often lead to a lack of energy to work out, as well as insufficient protein to replenish tissues after exercise. Furthermore, if you only consume juice, and not a bite of food, your body will go into detox mode, meaning it is working hard to dispel toxins and clean house. You want to allow your body to meet the goal you have set out for it. To Detox.
If your goal is to detox your body of toxins, nourish your cells, heal and repair, then focussing more on the cleanse and less on exercise is the answer. Allow your body to deeply detox by letting the juices do the work.
Weight Lifting And Juice Cleansing

Now weight lifting especially should be avoided because youre simply not getting enough protein, this is what repairs the muscles allowing them to grow stronger, and without enough protein, youre going to feel weak and sore. And during a cleanse youre probably going to be a bit weak and low energy anyway so no need to make things worse!
So hang up the squat rack for a few days while you cleanse. Or if you really cant resist adding in some protein powder to give you the extra boost youll need.

You May Experience Caffeine Withdrawal
If you’re fully committed to your juice cleanse, that means you’ll have had to cut out all caffeine. “Even if you normally drink only one cup a day, eliminating caffeine cold turkey may contribute to headaches, irritability, and difficulty with concentrating,” says nutritionist Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, and founder of Real Nutrition NYC.

How Does Cleanse Length Affect Things
As I hinted at before the longer the cleanse the more likely it is that youre going to hurt yourself if you keep up high intensity workouts. Youre cashing out a calorie debt that will lead to injury if you dont switch down a gear.
But in a 3 day cleanse youll likely be OK, just worn out, but as you get up to 7 days and beyond youre going to start running into trouble.
But again this is if youre cleansing to lose weight, if youre not restricting calories then exercising is fine, youll just find yourself more tired and probably recording a little slower than before.

You May Feel Sluggish
When consuming only fruits and vegetables via a juice cleanse, there is a decrease in the amount of calories being consumed regularly. “The body requires enough calories to be used as energy for normal body functions,” says Jim White, RD, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios. “Without enough calories and energy, you could feel weak, have headaches, or have low energy.”
Alternative Ways To Nourish Yourself
Juice cleanses arent recommended. Frequently relying on such restrictive diets is especially problematic.
The fact is that these diets are not sustainable long-term, and the potential benefits arent impressive, especially once you factor in the price tags of store-bought juices.

And cutting calories and not being able to chew food like we are made to do really is enough to make anyone moody. “Your blood sugar will spike from drinking the juice, and then it will crash and lead to mood swings,” warns Schapiro.
