Juice cleanses are hailed by some for their nutritional benefits, including weight loss, helping with digestion and providing essential nutrients.

But, Audrey Heist, a registered dietitian and director of health engagement at Atlanticare health system in New Jersey says that any benefits from juice cleanses are not directly related to the juice itself.

“Any perceived benefit that people experience on a multi-day juice cleanse will likely be short-lived,” Heist told USA TODAY in an email. “Some people may report feeling better but this is likely due to a reduction in processed foods, which tend to be high in unhealthy fats and added sugars vs. any actual true cleansing properties of the juice.”

Ysabel Montemayor, a registered dietitian and nutritional director at Fresh n’ Lean meal-delivery service, believes that these detoxes are actually causing more harm than good.

“Drinking solely will put participants at risk of nutritional deficiencies, and to put simply, starvation,” said Montemayor. “Most ‘cleanses’ typically lack protein, fiber and healthy fats and are high in sugar.”

In for a penny, in for a pound, I said to nobody but myself as I took my first sip of lemonade. I had finally begun my total cleansing fast. For reasons that are sometimes hard to recall, I am doing the renowned Master Cleanse, the strictest and most difficult fast of allexcept for the water fast. But really! Getting so excited over a lemonade sorbet? What had become of me? Food is my life, or at least half of my life, maybe a little more than that. Why would I give up half my life?

    I Tried The Master Cleanse And Here’s What Happened

    So… if you’ve been following on social media then you’ve seen my response/reaction to the master cleanse. To be fair I’m writing this on day 3 and if I make it beyond day three… I won’t go any further than day 7.

    I was feeling pretty good this morning. Had some tea first thing then drank my first lemonade. But by 10 oclock I started to get the aches and pains I had read about as possible side effects. The pain is in my back both upper & lower and Im having a hard time concentrating at work.

    After trying to suffer through for a few hours, I finally decided its best to go ahead to take something for the pain. I just couldnt take it any more. In the original book by Stanley Burroughs, he recommends against taking aspirin as it could slow down the cleansing process. But many cleansers have taken it without any ill effects. The recommendation is to only take the minimum dose you can until you experience relief. Im opting for comfort, so I started with 1 Advil.

    There is no delicate way to say this: The first five days of the Cleanse include a salt-water flush, and it is intense.     So I thoroughly researched the diet and then went on to buy my expensive maple syrup and other ingredients as well as a healthy laxative and peppermint tea.

    I started the Master Cleanse on the second of January. If you are like me and are embarking on this diet as part of a New Year’s resolution, learn from my mistakes and avoid doing these two things:

    #1 Mistake: Not Easing Into The Diet

    Both the book and online research advise you to ease into the diet. In the days leading up to the diet, you should eat less meat and less food until you’re down to only orange juicethen you start the diet. I was stubborn, and although I knew I was not supposed to, I started with the cleanse cold turkey on January 2, after indulging in Christmas food and a lot of good coffee throughout the holidays. Bad idea!

    The abrupt change from coffee and five or more meals of Christmas food a day to nothing but lemonade was a shock to my body. What was the result? I was hit with migraines and serious fatigue! But I was determined, so none of it stopped me.

    #2 Mistake: Incorrect Dosage for the Lemonade

    Do not skimp on the maple syrup by using teaspoons instead of tablespoons.

    Does It Get Results

    Yes. When I did it the first time like I said above, in the first 3 days of doing this cleanse, I lost about 5 pounds, and after doing it for 5 days, I went down even more . People who fully complete this cleanse can lose about a pound a day, sometimes more. If you do the cleanse, you will lose weight, no doubt about it.

    My second time doing it, I didnt get the same kinds of results, but I did lose about 10 pounds in 5 days but here are my documented details when I was on it.

    Overall, most people who do this cleanse lose about 5-10 pounds in that time. It also varies on how much undigested food/fat you have to lose.

    Me and my wife lost quite a bit of weight when we went through the cleanse.

    Once we finished we found that we were only craving foods that were natural and healthy which helped to continue our new weight. We did eventually gain back a little weight, but it was not fat.
