Best Overall: Cliganic Certified Organic Tea Tree Oil
Key ingredients: tea tree oil | Certifications: USDA Organic, Non GMO Verified, PETA Cruelty Free
One of the best plant-based acne fighting ingredients is tea tree oil. Its derived mainly from a plant native to Australia known as Melaleuca alternifolia. With both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree oil is great at killing acne causing bacteria and soothing inflammation. A study compared tea tree oil with 5% benzoyl peroxide lotion and found that both treatments reduced non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne. It took more time to see the results from the tea tree oil, though users had fewer side effects, meaning it can be a good option for those with sensitive skin.
With that being said, tea tree oil can also be irritating if applied directly to the skin. Its best to always dilute it with another oil. Jojoba oil is a good carrier oil since its also anti-Inflammatory and antimicrobial and resembles the skins natural sebum or oil, so it doesnt clog pores. Selecting organic tea tree oil and jojoba oil from Cliganic, you can create a DIY blend in a 40-60 ratio and put it in a dropper bottle to easily apply to the skin. You can always blend a gentler formula with less tea tree oil. Talk about customized skincare.

Cerave Renewing Salicylic Acid Cleanser
Two dermatologists, Chang and Kim, offer up CeraVe’s Renewing Salicylic Acid Cleanser as one of their top choices, but Kim points out that CeraVe doesn’t actually disclose the percent of salicylic acid, if that’s important to you. However, both agree that it’s a gentle cleanser that removes dirt and excess oil from pores. Formulated with skin-restoring ceramides and calming niacinamide to protect and repair the skin barrier, as Chang acknowledges, this fragrance-free option is a pretty safe bet. After all, you can cop a sizable eight-ounce bottle for less than $15 at the drugstore.

Skinfix: Brand Review And Best Products Revealed
It can be difficult to navigate the skincare landscape when a lot of it feels like marketing. Obviously, here at Byrdie, we do our researchbut to the average consumer, it’s easy to get caught up on pretty packaging or buzzy Instagram campaigns.
Of course, when it comes down to it, results and ingredients are what’s most importantand what I love about Skinfix, a clean, dermatologist-tested skincare brand, is that it leads with science, rather than fancy marketing lingo.
“Skin barrier health and skin concerns are not limited by age, gender or other demographics,” Skinfix founder and CEO Amy Gordinier tells Byrdie. “The brand was not developed as a marketing concept to target a specific demographic, but rather a movement to provide clean, clinically validated solutions to chronic skin concerns. Skin issues are prevalent for just about everyone, and Skinfix is unique in that we appeal to a broad range of clients across generations.”
In fact, Gordinier only developed the brand in the first place because of her medical curiosity. “I discovered a powerful formula for treating eczema that was originally created by pharmacist Thomas Dixon,” Gordinier says. “After reading the hand-written testimonials his family had collected over five generations by people who had used the product to heal serious skin issues, I knew this formula was special. I took out a mortgage on my home in order to buy the company.”
Versed Keep The Peace Acne Calming Cleanser
Another affordable acne-busting face wash is Versed’s Keep the Peace Acne Calming Cleanser. It’s spiked with 1.5 percent salicylic acid so it ‘gives that extra oomph for people with oily skin’, Kim notes. Ringing in a pH range of 5.2 to 6.2 , this foaming cream cleanser also packs in anti-inflammatory and antibacterial blue tansy to reduce signs of redness and keep skin happy.

Best Toner: Dickinson’s Enhanced Witch Hazel Hydrating Toner With Rosewater
Key Ingredients: witch hazel, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and vitamin E | Certifications: NA
For those battling mainly non-inflammatory acne, such as blackheads and whiteheads, a toner with witch hazel can help. As an astringent, witch hazel works to remove excess oil and shrink pores while offering anti-inflammatory benefits too. Dr. Mariwalla recommends a formula like Dickinson’s Enhanced Witch Hazel Hydrating Toner that is free from drying alcohol and has hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera. To avoid any irritation and over-drying your skin, try using this toner once a day after washing your face before bed and before applying any other skincare products. Use a reusable pad to be extra sustainable.
Paula’s Choice Pore Normalizing Cleanser
In case you weren’t aware, 2 percent is the maximum amount of salicylic acid, one of our favorite acne-fighting ingredients of all time, that can be used in an OTC product. Paula’s Choice Pore Normalizing Cleanser has a smaller dose of the beta hydroxy acid 0.5 percent, to be exact which Kim says is ‘less irritating to the skin but still effective for acne.’

Pholk Beauty Daily Detox Face Wash
Let’s get one fact straight: ‘Acne isn’t caused by oils’, David Colbert, a New York City board-certified dermatologist previously told ishonest. ‘Most people with acne have dry skin secondary to washes and medications, like Differin, RetinA, or benzoyl peroxide.’ So just because a face wash contains oils, doesn’t mean it’s unsafe for acne-prone skin. The right oils can actually regulate oil production and hydrate skin, leading to fewer breakouts over time.
At the center of Pholk Beauty Daily Detox Face Wash’s gentle formula is Kalahari watermelon seed oil, which banishes acne-causing sebum and dirt from your pores. To lock in moisture and reduce inflammation, there’s a crew of glycerin, aloe vera, and a boatload of other oils and, in turn, your skin is less likely to overproduce oil.
Best Spot Treatment: Kate Somerville Eradikate Acne Treatment
Key ingredients: sulfur, salicylic acid, zinc oxide | Certifications: PETA Cruelty Free
If you wake up to the dreaded red, angry zit, reach for a product with sulfur. Sulfur is an agent that calms inflamed skin which is helpful in cystic acne and true pimples and even rosacea, says Dr. Mariwalla. The mineral works to exfoliate dead skin and dry out pimples, and reduce the appearance of acne overall while still being gentle on the skin. With Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment, you simply dab the solution when you feel a blemish coming and let the product do its magic while you sleep.
In addition to the 10% sulfur, the solution also has salicylic acid, a core player in fighting acne due to its ability to break up the keratin that causes clogged pores, says Dr. Mariwalla. Zinc oxide also works to further reduce oil production and clogged pores. Dab it on and watch that zit shrink overnight.

Best Mask: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
Key Ingredients: bentonite clay | Certifications: NA
Some of the masks you see on social media arent as effective as they claim, but the Aztec Secret Clay Mask may be worth the hype. Beloved by celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian and Mindy Kaling, the mask contains one simple ingredient: bentonite clay. Dr. Mariwalla recommends masks with this clay as it can be effective in reducing excess oil from the skin, which can clog pores. Studies have also shown that it can help heal wounds and soothe inflammation, two issues acne sufferers know very well.
Simply mix the clay with water to create a smooth paste to apply to your skin. Like with any mask, Dr. Mariwalla recommends not using it too frequently to avoid overdrying the skin, so its best to use it once every week or so. Set aside the time to do a face mask and reap the skin benefits of not only detoxing but also destressing.
Dr Jart+ Teatreement Cleansing Foam
Rich in tea tree and green tea extracts , Dr. Jart+’s Teatreement Cleansing Foam soothes blemish-prone areas, rebalances your skin’s pH, and spot-treats new and emerging breakouts. In other words, you won’t leave the bathroom feeling like your face was stripped raw.

How To Request A Product Review
I try to review all of the products that I can when I publish a list. Note, I am in the US and I only have access to US products. Please dont be rude if I skipped your favorite cleanser, when items are out of stock sometimes they arent on the brands site, or maybe you are in Asia and I am in the US.
I reserve the comments on each post for reviews of product from that brand, this makes it easier for others to find products later. Please only ask about Skinfix on this post, I will delete other product questions. You can find other brands here. If your brand is not included, please ask on the brand list post.
Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid
This cream won the Allure Best of Beauty award in 2019, and it was well deserved!
This is Skinfixs best face cream. Its highly effective, and leaves skin looking smooth and hydrated. Despite the deep hydration, its easy to apply, and is surprisingly lightweight for a product of its kind. However, I would still recommend applying it in the nighttime, as it can be quite heavy during the day under makeup and SPF.
Rather than a traditional scoop-your-product bottle, this cream comes with a pump dispenser. This may or may not be to your liking, but it does make removing the product feel more sanitary. Mine worked well, and didnt break.
On top of all that good stuff, some of the claims of this cream are: allergy tested & pH balanced, cruelty free & vegan, and noncomedogenic. Not too shabby, eh?
Overall, this is a great cream for those seeking extreme hydration. Its an excellent choice for nighttime application, especially during the winter months!

Treating acne can sometimes feel like being at war with your own skin. You can try to use the harshest chemicals, exfoliants, and masks to obliterate the pimples. Yet its important to remember that you and your skin are on the same side, and piling on extreme ingredients can actually backfire by making your skin overly dry and sensitive.
In fact, acne is often more than skin deep and can be caused by a variety of factors that no skin care product can fix, like hormones, stress, sleep, and diet. After first addressing these issues, Kavita Mariwalla, board certified dermatologist and founder of Mariwalla Dermatology, recommends sticking to a simple skincare regimen, consisting of cleansing, moisturizing, and using acne fighting actives. Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and tretinoin are safe and powerful acne fighters, but even they cause irritation. Thankfully, theres a number of mineral and plant derived-ingredients that also can effectively treat blemishes.

Best For Body: Treeactiv Acne Eliminating Body Spray
Key Ingredients: salicylic acid, tea tree oil, willow bark and witch hazel | Certifications: NA
One of the hardest parts about treating acne on your back, or bacne, is physically reaching the area. Thats why a spray like this one from Treeactiv can be so handy when applying it on your own. Just simply spray it on your back, shoulders, chest, or anywhere you need it, and you are good to go. This formula combines many of the key ingredients that Dr. Mariwalla recommends for treating acne, like salicylic acid, tea tree oil, willow bark, and witch hazel. While some other popular body acne sprays can have a heavy chemical smell, this spray actually has a pleasant scent, thanks to the blend of essential oils like peppermint, menthol, and eucalyptus.

Hero Cosmetics Clear Collective Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser
It comes as no surprise that a brand responsible for award-winning pimple patches also created an acne-fighting cleanser that’s won us over. Meet Hero Cosmetics’ Clear Collective Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser, a jelly-to-foam and fragrance-free formula infused with a long list of good-for-skin ingredients. Two types of alpha hydroxy acids , glycolic and mandelic acid, dissolve dead skin upon contact while willow bark extract gently resurfaces. Enzymes found in pineapple and yuzu fruit extracts also aid in chemical exfoliation and unclogging pores.
Expect a smoother and brighter complexion with regular use. It even contains probiotics like Bifida ferment lysate which, as Chang previously explained to ishonest, has been shown in clinical studies to help decrease skin sensitivity, increase resistance to external stressors, improve skin barrier function, and reduce dryness.
Best On The Go: Cellerx Clinical Reset
Key ingredients: pure hypochlorous acid | Certifications: NA
Whether you already had acne or a fresh batch of mask-ne, face masks can wreak havoc on your skin. As dermatologist Dr. Julie Russak puts it, masks can be breeding ground for bacteria as they trap the air you exhale. She says the best remedy is to wash your face as soon as you are done wearing a mask.
Of course, thats easier said than done. If you are on the go, you can try a hypochlorous acid spray like CelleRX Clinical Reset. HOCl is created by your body from white blood cells as a defense system against infection, and chemists have replicated this formula by using electrolysis to break down a simple saltwater solution. The result is a substance that both kills bacteria and calms the skin. Studies have found the solution to be just as effective in treating inflammatory acne as benzoyl peroxide.
“Having personally tried this product, Im impressed by how I can spray it over a full face of makeup without causing a waterfall of foundation streaks. Seriously, once the spray air dries, my makeup looks as good as new. The spray is perfect when Im running errands or traveling and want to freshen up my face. Its so much easier than having to wash my face after every time Im done wearing a mask and less wasteful than using a cleansing wipe.”Emily Cieslak, contributor
