Homemade Tea Tree Oil Facial Cleanser
No, this is not food. It feels wrong, I know. Maybe even a little shocking and misplaced, but I promise youll love this homemade tea tree oil facial cleanser I made for you.
A few weeks ago, I decided to gradually go chemical free. It was challenging at first, but once I experienced natural, wholesome products in there raw state, I was hooked.
It all started when I made Homemaker Chics recipe for Citrus Body Sugar Scrub. Ive never experienced anything so lush and fresh. It left my body feeling silky smooth and moisturizedthere was no need to apply lotion after the shower. Its better than any scrub youll find in the store for a fraction of the cost. The recipe made 6-8oz. jars of scrub. I kept two jars for myself and gifted the rest. The quality is unbeatable and the savings are incomparable. It is Noelles scrub that gave me the nudge I needed to go chemical free. I thought, If this scrub is so amazing, then there must be tons of other homemade alternatives floating around the inter web that are just as awesome. There were, and there are. Ill never return to synthetic and commercial products again.
The question Does your homemade deodorant work? arises quite frequently in conversation. I dont smell. I havent been told I smell. So, I guess the answer is yes. Yes, my deodorant works. Its made with coconut oil, so it also moisturizes and smooths my pits. Sexy, right?
Oh yes!

What Is Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil, or melaleuca oil, is extracted from melaleuca alternifolia a native Australian plant that has been in use for at least a century. This essential Australian oil is said to have healing properties and to be especially beneficial as a skin treatment.
Research shows that melaleuca oil, more commonly known as tea tree oil, has antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Tea tree oil should only be applied topically as ingesting it can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other severe side effects.

What Exactly Is Tea Tree Oil
“Tea tree oil is the oil derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, native to New South Wales and Queensland, Australia,” says Los Angeles-based board-certified dermatologist Naissan Wesley, M.D. “Aboriginal Australians extracted the oil for traditional healing. Most methods of extraction involve steam distillation to obtain the essential oil.”
In its most natural form, tea tree oil is an essential oil so strong that it may be irritating to skin, so it’s often diluted either with water or a carrier oil like coconut, grapeseed, or jojoba oils, says Dr. Wesley.
The Pros & Cons Of Cleansing With Tea Tree Oil
The Pros:
Due to its antibacterial properties, a tea tree oil face cleanser can be used to treat mild acne. This is due to the fact that tea tree oil has the ability to damage the cell walls of bacteria.
A study found that treatments with this oil improved the severity of acne, and tea tree oil has also been compared to benzoyl peroxide, a known acne treatment.
The Cons:
Some risks of using tea tree oil include allergic contact dermatitis, male prepubertal gynecomastia and the development of resistant bacteria with constant use.
Some people may dislike the strong smell of tea tree oil and others may experience a slight stinging sensation on sensitive or inflamed skin.

How Does Tea Tree Oil Benefit Skin
Tea tree oil contains key compounds that reduce the bacteria on skin’s surface that contribute to acne production, says Ava Shamban, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in Beverly Hills. Plus, she adds, “it helps calm the skin and reduces redness caused by acne pustules.”
If those benefits sound similar to benzoyl peroxide, it’s because they are: Severalstudies pitting the two acne-fighting ingredients often show that tea tree oil is just as effective, “but with fewer side effects such as dryness, irritation, itching, and peeling,” adds Dr. Shamban. “Its potent germ-fighting properties also make tea tree oil a valued natural antiseptic for skin abrasions and cuts.”
While tea tree oil is best known for its acne-fighting benefits due to its antimicrobial properties, the perks don’t stop there. “Tea tree oil also has been shown to have some efficacy in the treatment of nail fungus, athlete’s foot, and dandruff,” says Aegean Chan, M.D., a dual board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist based in Santa Barbara, California.

Tea Tree Oil For Skin
Extracted from the leaves of a tree native to the swamplands of Australia, tea tree oil is a fragrant liquid that has been used for many years as a part of natural healing remedies. Unlike other herbs that are often taken by mouth, tea tree essential oil is primarily applied to the skin. The oil of the plant contains natural chemicals that have been shown in clinical studies to have the ability to fight bacteria and fungus. Because of the actions of these chemicals, researchers speculate that tea tree oil can be beneficial for various skin care concerns. One of the most well-established uses of tea tree oil is addressing athlete’s foot, a fungal infection of the skin that develops on the feet. In clinical studies, 10 percent tea tree oil was shown to be effective at alleviating some of the discomfort caused by the condition. In stronger concentrations, it is shown to eliminate the infection in roughly half of users. Some people also use tea tree oil to address other types of fungal skin infections. These include ringworm, but there is not enough evidence to know if it is beneficial for assisting with any other skin problem caused by fungus.
A Word On Preservatives
Since this recipe does not include any preservatives, I make mine in small batches. Typically, in a 4-ounce size, as I will use it up in a shorter amount of time. I have never had an issue with mold or bacteria growth in this product. It tends to be more commonly found when adding water to a homemade skincare product.
There are also no emulsifiers or ingredients added to this recipe to keep it from separating. This cleanser will separate as it sits and the ingredients settle. This is expected and shouldnt be a concern, simply shake before each use to evenly distribute the ingredients.
