On Taking Inspiration From Korean Skincare Rituals
Then I Met You inspires all to go deeper with their multi-step skincare routines it was something I came to appreciate when I was living in Korea.
While in Seoul, I came to love and embrace their skin-first philosophy, which prioritises treating and preventing skin concerns by getting to the root of the problem with care, effective ingredients, and solid routines.
Incorporating the best of Korean ingredient innovations into our formulas, as seen with the luxurious persimmon extract in our classic Living Cleansing Balm, £37, and the ellagic acid which our Giving Essence, £48, spotlights, we really want those who use our products to carve a little time out of their lives during their skin rituals to spark transformative experience and indulge in self-care.

It was all so dull, then we met the Living Cleansing Balm…

The Results: Instantly Clean Skin
This cleansing balm yields instant results. Namely, it removes makeup and leaves my skin feeling clean. Other cleansing balms require you to remove with a muslin cloth or follow with another cleanser. Then I Met You recommends that you pair the Living Cleansing Balm with the brands Soothing Tea Cleansing Gel, but I find that most of the time, my skin feels clean already without having to double-cleanse.
Another thing I love about this cleansing balm: Ive tried so many similar products, and almost all of them leave a thin film of oil behindbut not this one.
Overall, it makes arguably the most boring part of my skincare routine the one I look forward to the most.

Cleanser Reviews: Then I Met You Oneoseven Fresh Skin Doctors

Cleansing is one of the non-negotiable steps in a skincare routine, and sometimes picking a good cleanser isnt an easy task. We tend to think of cleansers as less important to get right, since it doesnt stay on your skin for long, but in my opinion finding a cleanser that works for your skin will make a huge difference. The wrong cleanser can cause prolonged irritation, which leads to worsened acne. It can also make dehydrated skin so, so much worse.
Theres a thorough guide to picking a cleanser and working out a cleansing routine in The Lab Muffin Guide to Basic Skincare.
Here are some quick reviews of a few cleansers Ive tried recently. These are all gel or foaming cleansers which I use on their own in the shower if I havent worn makeup, or after makeup removal if Ive left the house that day.

Oneoseven Low pH Chaga Cleanser is a Korean cleanser that easily lathers to give a thick, luxurious foam. It contains small decorative green tea leaf bits, but there arent enough for it to be a scrub. It has a herbal scent. The cleanser left my skin feeling really soft, but ever-so-slightly tight. Best Korean Skincare Products For A Healthier Hydrated Complexion
Then I Met You came out of my deep love for jeong, says Cho. Jeong really emphasises deep connections with those around you. It also prioritises choosing actions and making decisions that inspire good. Pairing my knowledge of skincare as a curator and aesthetician with the jeong I have with the skincare community is my perfect match.
Its this focus on connection that informed every aspect of the brand, from the signature periwinkle-blue hue of its packaging to the luxurious textures of its formulations, she adds.
Over the years, you may have spotted the brands dreamy periwinkle-blue products all over your social media feeds. Its become hugely popular in the States and among skincare experts. So much so, Caroline Hirons even hailed the Cleansing Balm one of her favourite beauty finds of the year.
Speaking in an IGTV, she said: I didnt expect to fall in love with a cleansing balm in the way that I did, before calling the cleanser brilliantly moisturising and nourishing.
Now, the brand is finally available in the UK through e-retailer Cult Beauty. Here, Cho tells us a bit more about this special skincare brand and I give you my thoughts on every one of its products

Then I Met You Soothing Tea Cleansing Gel
Founded by esthetician and beauty entrepreneur, Charlotte Cho, Then I Met You abides by an attitude of thoughtfulness that transcends self-care. It’s inspired by the Korean concept of ‘jeong’ – a deep feeling of empathy and affection that one can develop for people, places and things – to go deeper, to focus a little extra effort in the right places, and spark real change to your skin. An invaluable sidekick to the industry-adored , the Soothing Tea Cleansing Gel is the ultimate second cleanse designed to make quick work of oil-based impurities, this gentle cleanser clarifies your pores and counters breakouts all while flooding your skin with hydrating glycerin and sodium hyaluronateno one likes their skin to feel stripped.

The Soothing Tea Cleansing Gel:
Again, this is my first go around with a water-based cleaner, but I also really enjoy the experience that it offers. The consistency of this product feels incredibly dewy like jelly and soft to touch in a beautiful burnt amber color. You take about a pearl-sized amount of the gel and rub it into your skin. I feel like it’s hydrating and my skin drinks it up. It has a comfortable and relaxing scent, which helps me enjoy waking up and winding down in the evening. This is the other main part of my skincare routine that I look forward to, and I do this one twice a day. To summarize, I love both of these cleansers and I would absolutely buy them again in the future for the experience of the texture, smell, and how hydrating they feel for my skin.
Then I Met You Skincare Review

Although I’m Korean, I was adopted when I was baby and have lived in America my whole life. I’ve done some identity searching here and there from when I was younger, and more recently after getting in touch with my birth mother last December. So, I’ve started to work to learn the language for the nth time. This time around, though, I’ve also started watching K-dramas and decided to do some research into taking care of my skin, as Korean skincare seems extremely popular. My adopted mom is very into skincare herself and while I never used to pay attention, I thought it might be a great way to get into a hobby and passion that my mom likes while also connecting a bit to my culture. Plus, your skin is your body’s largest organ and it’s important to take care of it. After all, who doesn’t like some self-care?
Now onto doing my research! I looked up various articles, websites, and frequented the r/AsianBeauty and r/KoreanBeauty subreddits to find out what people recommended — and boy, let me tell you, the folks there are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. by sharing their experiences and reviews with products first-hand. First, I had to figure out what my skin type was I believe I’m a combination skin type as my face sometimes feels pretty oily, but very dry on other occasions — but I’m still not sure.
Finally, I’m the type of person to dive into something headfirst, so of course I ordered the whole set to try as my first skincare products ever.

The Calming Gel Tide Cream:
As much as I also wanted to love this moisturizer, like the toner, I had a lot of trouble with it. The consistency is a nice creamy gel as the name says, and it’s very lightweight with a slight scent to it. I enjoyed that it blended into my skin so easily and that it had a very thin texture. The cream also felt hydrating at first when I applied it, but then my skin would quickly dry out and I would have a reaction to it. My face would sting and there was a minor burning sensation, so again, I’m led to believe that either I have more sensitive skin than I initially thought or I’m reacting to one of the ingredients in this.
At first, I thought it was the essence and not the moisturizer however, the uncomfortable sensation got worse after applying the moisturizer and I thought initially that it might be making it worse somehow. I tried using one and not the other on a couple of occasions, to which my face still felt this painful tingle — leading me to the conclusion that my skin is simply not compatible with either product. My face now has splotches of red on it, it feels dry and itchy, and my pores are fairly visible when I didn’t think they were before. My mom who has dry skin also gave it a try and also did not have the best experience with it. Dry and sensitive skin types should most likely stay away from this product, especially at a price point of $42 which is a steep amount to pay if it doesn’t work out for you.
Fresh Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash
Fresh Sugar Strawberry Exfoliating Face Wash is a non-foaming cleanser with little sugar crystals in it. The sugar crystals are very fine, and if you dont want to exfoliate you can splash a bit of water in your hand with the cleanser and rub it around so theyll dissolve before you use it. It also means you dont end up with little scrubbing bits stuck around your face and in your sink and shower one of my biggest annoyances with scrubs!
This doesnt foam, and doesnt leave my skin with a tight feeling. But I felt like it didnt clean my skin as well as I expected a cleanser to not that surprising, since cleansing surfactants are quite far down the ingredients list for a cleanser. It does have an absolutely delicious scent that reminds me of Splice iceblocks . The pH is quite low: 4-5.
