Getting Rid Of Parasites
Eliminating parasitic infections is not always easy to do, and it depends on what type of parasite is present and how severe the infection is. However, there are effective ways to eliminate a wide range of parasites, and some methods for doing so are time-tested and have been used traditionally for thousands of years.
One traditional method of detoxing parasites from the body, and one that has had much modern scientific research to back it, is the use of a well-crafted wormwood complex. Wormwood complex is the name given to a formula for killing parasites that contain three essential herbs: wormwood, clove, and green black walnut hulls. Together, these anti-parasitic herbs may kill the larvae, egg, and adult stages of parasites. When used alongside a parasite detox protocol and a healthy diet, it can help to kill the entire life cycle of a parasite.
Symptom: Increased Gi Upset
Since parasites like to live in your digestive tract, sometimes digestive symptoms can increase during a parasite cleanse. You might experience bloating, constipation, diarrhea, cramps, or other issues with your digestion.
How to Fight It
- Certain herbs can be calming to your digestive system. If youre struggling with diarrhea, binders can also help bind your stools.
- A digestive essential oil blend that includes peppermint, rosemary, and lemon can also be helpful to apply topically on your stomach.
- Traditionally, chamomile has been used to treat digestive ailments. Chamomile tea may protect you against diarrhea, nausea, and gas due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
You can also up your green juice or bone broth intake to give your digestive system a break.
Symptoms Of Parasitic Infection
What are some signs that you may have a parasite? The most common symptoms of parasitic infection include:
- Digestive issues, including constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, gas, heartburn
- Stomach pains and tenderness
- Symptoms of dehydration
When should you visit a doctor?
If you think that you may have parasites, its always recommended that you visit a doctor, such as a gastroenterologist, to be tested.
Your doctor can run a number of tests to learn more about what may be happening in your GI tract for example, by looking for signs of inflammation or looking more closely at your stool. These tests can include a fecal exam, endoscopy/colonoscopy , blood tests, X-rays or sometimes an MRI.
Its also possible to do stool sample tests at home that may detect parasites by looking for eggs in your stool. You can bring these results to your doctor to learn more about potential treatment options, or you may try treating the issue yourself using the steps recommended above .

How To Do A Parasite Cleanse Naturally
Most parasite cleanses involve taking herbal supplements, which are of course natural.
As we mentioned above, certain parasite infections require antibiotic treatment from your doctor.
Humans have been dealing with parasites for thousands of years, and for most of that time, they used herbs to treat them. Thats why we still use them now: herbs are among the most time-tested remedies for parasites and other diseases known to man.
Modern research backs this up:
- Artemisia annua is effective against monogenean parasites1
- Oil of oregano eliminates blastocystis hominis2
- Herbal remedies equal to antibiotic therapy in treating worm infections3
Natural Medicines That Cleanse Specific Body Systems

To cleanse specific bodily systems of parasites, naturally-based, plant-derived medicines provide the most effective approach because they target certain areas, cleaning out unhealthy objects. Your natural health practitioner can recommend remedies for various systems, including the intestines, liver, and specific areas of the digestive tract. In addition, natural health practitioners can provide homeopathic therapies that drive specific types of parasites from your body.
During your consultation, your natural health practitioner will recommend herbs that help with detoxification without interacting with any medications you are taking. Most herbs are gentle and have no serious side effects. Your naturopath can advise which supplements are easiest on the body. Most herbal detox programs last for two weeks on, two weeks off until the problem is cleared up, but some programs last up to a month at a time.

The hull of the black walnut is a powerful anti-parasitic agent. But, it has to be used in a very precise way and with very precise timing. Check with your doctor before taking supplements, especially if you have a chronic illness that needs to be managed with medication.

Natural Treatments For Dehydration Symptoms
Most of us love the summer months, spending time anywhere the weathers warm and working up a good sweat. However, long periods of hot, humid climates or exposure to soaring temperatures in other forms, such as from exercising can lead to problems associated with an electrolyte imbalance, including dehydration symptoms.
Some surveys show that 60 percent to 75 percent of Americans dont drink enough water daily, and up to 30 percent may be chronically dehydrated. Staying properly hydrated, especially whenever youre losing fluids, is the very best way to feel your best and also ward off potential heat exhaustion and dehydration symptoms.
Whom does dehydration affect most? Athletes, people who perform manual labor outdoors, young children, those with gastrointestinal health conditions and the elderly are all at higher risk for experiencing dehydration.
What do you need to do in order to protect yourself from the sometimes-dangerous effects of fluid and electrolyte loss? As youll learn, drinking enough water daily, monitoring your thirst and urination, and rehydrating after workouts are all important steps.

Symptom: Aches And Pains
Another very common and uncomfortable die-off symptom is an aching body. Your muscles, joints, or even organs may hurt as a result of your body eliminating toxic waste while parasites die.
How to Fight It
- Try an Epsom salt or magnesium chloride bath. This helps pull toxins from your skin, and also replenishes the magnesium in your body, which is one of the first things you burn during stress.
- Remind clients to also exercise because not being active can actually worsen joining pain. This doesnt have to be intense exercise. Instead, focus on easy movements to promote stability and to stretch any affected joints and muscles.
- You can also use hot/cold packs for immediate relief to joint pain. Start with a hot compress for 20 minutes and then switch to a cold ice pack for another 20.
- For an extra boost, keep your joints and connective tissue strong by including more collagen in your diet by consuming foods high in protein. Collagen can also be taken in powders or bone broth.
- You can also get chiropractic care to get non-invasive adjustments and provide instant and long term relief from your aches and pains.
Can Some Parasites Be Beneficial

Some researchers claim that expelling harmless helminths from your body works against you that these worms work to balance out our gut biomes and prevent allergies and autoimmune disorders.
But Moore disagrees. The word parasite derives from the Greek term for uninvited dinner guest, he says. These things tend to feed off of you, and theyre, by definition, not a good thing to have. But the best ones will cause no symptoms at all.

How Long Before A Parasite Cleanse Works
How long a parasite cleanse takes to work depends on so many factors, for example:
- Your definition of works
- Which parasite you have
- The method youre using to address your parasite infection
- Your individual health status and body chemistry
At Healthpath, we usually recommend that you follow an antimicrobial protocoldesigned to reduce numbers of unwanted microbes in your gutfor around six to ten weeks. Most people see definite improvements in their symptoms after a week or so.
However, some people may need longer on a protocol, or to try a different kind of approach. Some parasites require conventional anti-parasitic medication from your doctor.
If your Gut Health Test reveals you have Giardia, for example, you need to tell your doctor right away. Youll get a pharmaceutical antimicrobial which is designed to kill the parasite quickly.
This usually works within a week. However some infections dont respond to these antimicrobials. Theyre also very powerful, so theyre likely to cause quite a bit of damage to the rest of your microbiome while they do their job.
Thats why its important to pay attention to your gut health throughout and after any kind of antimicrobial protocol or parasite cleanse, whether youre taking antibiotics from your doctor, or herbal antimicrobials through us at Healthpath .
Gut Parasite Cleanses: Fact Or Fiction
Many popular wellness websites claim that nearly everyone has a parasite in their colonthe large intestine. They also suggest that regular gut cleanses will detoxify the body and get rid of parasitic infections, without taking medication prescribed by a doctor.
These cleansing treatments typically include natural, plant-based supplements that contain ingredients often found in medical treatments for parasites. For example, wormwood is a key ingredient in many gut parasite cleanses and in 2018, a study in humans found that wormwood can effectively treat some types of parasites.
Its true that many of the natural ingredients in the cleanses can be helpful in clearing the body of parasites, but only if you actually have a parasite. How do you know if you really have parasites in your body? Only a lab test can provide accurate results.
It should also be noted that there hasnt been strong research to prove that colon parasite cleanses work. Many of the cleanses promote a healthier diet, which leads to positive, noticeable changes in the digestive system. Sometimes these reactions in the digestive system are perceived as parasites dying off and leaving the body, but its hard to be sure. Ultimately, you should get tested for parasites before and after a cleanse to determine if you need treatment and if the parasites have been cleared.

What Are Detoxes And Cleanses
A variety of âdetoxificationâ diets, regimens, and therapiesâsometimes called âdetoxesâ or âcleansesââhave been suggested as ways to remove toxins from your body, lose weight, or promote health.
âDetoxificationâ programs may involve a single process or a variety of approaches. These include:
- Drinking only juices or similar beverages
- Eating only certain foods
- Using dietary supplements or other commercial products
- Cleansing the colon with enemas, laxatives, or colon hydrotherapy
- Reducing environmental exposures
These programs may be advertised commercially, offered at health centers, or part of naturopathic treatment.
Some âdetoxificationâ programs can be unsafe and falsely advertised. For more information on safety, see the âWhat about safety?â section below.
What Does The Research Say About Detoxes And Cleanses
There have been only a small number of studies on âdetoxificationâ programs in people. While some have had positive results on weight and fat loss, insulin resistance, and blood pressure, the studies themselves have been of low qualityâwith study design problems, few participants, or lack of peer review .
A 2015 review concluded that there was no compelling research to support the use of âdetoxâ diets for weight management or eliminating toxins from the body. A 2017 review said that juicing and âdetoxâ diets can cause initial weight loss because of low intake of calories but that they tend to lead to weight gain once a person resumes a normal diet. There have been no studies on long-term effects of âdetoxificationâ programs.

Parasite Cleanse With Epsom Salt
Epsom salt *, or magnesium sulfate, is an exceptionally good laxative. It helps flush everything out of your digestive system. This includes the good and the bad. In minute quantities, that also is a good magnesium supplement.
We dont recommend the use of Epsom salt to help remove parasites. The quantities required and the length of time you would need to take Epsom salt can cause dehydration and malnutrition.
Side Effects Allergies And Drug Interactions
Wormwood herb is not meant for long-term use. Make sure you dont exceed recommended doses because excessive consumption could be highly toxic. It may be best to use wormwood in dried form, which contains little, if any, of the volatile oil thujone.
The FDA lists wormwood unsafe for internal use due to the toxicity of thujone oil. However, its considered to be safe when taken by mouth in the amounts commonly found in food and beverages, including bitters and vermouth, as long as these products are thujone-free.
Using wormwood for longer than four weeks or at higher than recommended doses may lead to nausea, vomiting , restlessness, insomnia, vertigo, tremors and seizures.
Wormwood products that contain thujone, like absinthe, can be unsafe when taken by mouth. Absinthe effects/thujone effects can include restlessness, difficulty sleeping, nightmares, seizures, dizziness, tremors, muscle breakdown, kidney failure, vomiting, stomach cramps, urine retention, thirst, numbness of arms and legs, paralysis, and death.
Dont take this herb in any form if youre pregnant or breast-feeding. There have been documented abortifacient and emmenagogue effects of wormwood.
If youre allergic to ragweed and other plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family, then wormwood may cause an allergic reaction.
Wormwood is not recommended for people with kidney disorders. The oil might cause kidney failure. If you have kidney concerns, dont take this herb before talking with your doctor.

Signs You Picked Up A Parasite While Abroad
If you travel to the far corners of the globe, to places such as China, India, and Africa, it’s possible to bring a parasite home despite your best efforts. Even trips to well-established resort communities, such as Cancun, Mexico, come with parasite risk, particularly if you drink non-bottled water. While non-bottled water is fairly easy to avoid, you have to eat, and even well-prepared foods can contain parasites.
In typical cases, parasite victims will return from their trips, experiencing stomach pains and dysentery. According to the CDC, persistent travelers’ diarrhea is a positive sign for parasitic infection. If you return from an overseas trip and find your intestines hurting and need to use the bathroom too frequently, make sure to get tested for a parasitic infection. Once diagnosed, your naturopath can prescribe the herbs and diet that will repel the invaders.
The Risks Of Parasite Cleanses

Not only is there no upside to these cleanses , there are many potential downsides. “The risks depend on the type of cleanse,” says Dr. Mannon. Note that parasite cleanses are not tested to see if they work or if they’re safe. They haven’t gone through any type of Food and Drug Administration review or approval process.

First Off How Do You Know If You Parasites
Parasite infections are common. In fact, notable sources such as Victoria Health estimate that 80% of people have parasites living in their guts. The CDC recognizes that parasite infections affect millions and are largely ignored.
One of the biggest hurdles with recognizing and tackling a parasite infection is that symptoms can be chronic, but vague.
Also, most physicians are not educated about parasitic infections and how parasites affect humans.
Therefore, parasite infections are often left completely untreated.
